A girl boss -- a term coined by Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso in her best-selling book, #GIRLBOSS -- is a woman that’s extremely independent, wise beyond her years, hardworking, and, most of all, motivated. Do you know a girl boss? Or maybe you are a girl boss? It’s a way of life for some, and for others, it’s a baller hashtag to use after crushing a day at the office. Regardless, the term is geared towards encouraging women to reach higher and push harder. The dream of becoming a girl boss is now more reachable than ever.

As I’m in my 20s, I’ve been living “the selfish years”. I’m at the point of my life when it’s important to put most of my time and energy into myself. Why? Because I’m young, I’m learning, and I’m mentally maturing more than ever before. It’s been a period where I’m finding myself and figuring out what I’m truly made of all whole hang way too much fun in the process! A lot of early 20 year old women spend most of their time focused on love and social lives, but some of them don’t. Don’t get me wrong, I love my husband and my friends but I’m focused on myself too.

I’m determine to absolutely kill all aspects of life… yes, even the money saving part, but maybe not so much the party life. But let’s be honest, if you’re a true girlboss in the most prime time of your life, the last thing you’re concerned about is finding a party to attend.

After all, I believe that everyone has an inner girl boss in them somewhere. Maybe she just needs a little motivation to come out. Below is a list of 6 ways to be the girl boss you’ve always wanted to be.

YOU are number one. In order to be a girl boss, you must put yourself first. You have to stay more focused on yourself than you ever have before. Being a twenty-something can be so difficult because you might be an adult, you’re still extremely young and easily influenced. With that being said, you need to always do what’s best for you. Sometimes that might be staying in on a Friday night to be product on Saturday or not buying that new Kate Spade bag so you can take a class instead. A true girl boss is focused on herself and her success. Everyday she’s doing something to make herself more successful in every way! Do you, always!

Wake up early, prepare for the day, get yourself together, and literally get sh!t done! That’s the grind. Of course, everyone has their own grind or way of “slaying” things, but personally I believe in doing all things with 100% effort. If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to go back and fix it? For a girl boss, it’s important to use every hour of the day effectively. Sure, some days are slower than others, but for the most part, girl bosses are usually killing it 24/7. Everyone knows THAT girl…

Every girl feels more confident when they’ve taken the time to shower, throw on make-up, and ironed their clothes. We feel more confident when wearing an outfit we love and feel comfortable in. Although most of us twenty-somethings are “balling on a budget”, we can still dress to impress. A girl boss is that girl people look at and think, “dang it, that chick always has it together”. It doesn’t matter if she does or not, she is dressed to impress!

As twenty-something, we need to spend more of our time listening than speaking. You’ll find that listening to others give their two cents, advice, directions, and whatever else it may be, is WAY more beneficial than you putting in your own… always, but especially in your twenties. This is the perfect time to soak up all the information you have access to and listen to those around you. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t always have to agree or listen to their words, but just listen. . I guarantee it will get your ears much further in life than your mouth… I know it’s done the trick for me so far!

This pretty much sums everything up, and if you consider yourself a girl boss, then you already get what this means. Faking it ‘till you make it, like I stated previously in #3, is simple. No, it doesn’t mean literally be fake, but it means that, even when you don’t exactly have it all together just yet, act like you do. Everyone knows that when you're 20-something, you’re usually in the process of actually getting it together and making your way, but if you come off like a total mess while doing so, no one is going to take you seriously.

Time management is the key to being a successful girl boss. You should have a daily, organized schedule to follow. It helps you manage your time, stay on top of your goals, and of course, find time for fun! Time management skills will also help you accomplish your goals. Girl Bosses have time for everything because they are organized and use every hour out of the day.
