A few weeks ago I was crazy busy at work and I had overbooked my social calendar. I was on the verge of breaking down due to all the stress at work and having to cancel plans with friends. I was sitting on the couch with my hair in a messy bun, my dog in my lap, and my planner open in front of me. I looked over at Andrew almost in tears because I didn’t have time to take Frankie on a walk because I had to meet a deadline. He looked at me in the most pitiful look and said, “Sarah, you just need to stop trying to please everyone else and take time for yourself. You haven’t washed your hair all week! You seriously need to step back and reorganize your schedule”. I was shocked.
Mind you, I have been using dry shampoo all week so technically I had washed my hair. But regardless, Andrew was right. I was a hot freaking mess and I needed to get it together. Let’s face it we are all busy, and if you are like anything like me, you are probably constantly just making more plans. But in the process of pleasing everyone else, it’s almost as if I’m losing myself. One of the best ways to take care of yourself is to create some sort of “me time” everyday. Yet it seems like there are never enough hours in the day for us to take one just for ourselves.
But now’s the time to say Yes! We all need time and space to rest and recharge our batteries before we can give our best to everyone else around us. There are ways to carve out time for yourself; you just have to get a little creative about it. So in efforts to help you find time for yourself, I want to share three tips that you can use to say yes to “me” time!
1. Set a Schedule
Book time on your phone's calendar the same way you would a doctor's appointment. By doing this, you are creating time for yourself throughout your day and it’s just waiting for you. You schedule doctor’s appointments and dentist appointments in your calendar. So why don’t you schedule yourself in? If you make an appointment for a date with yourself and put it in your calendar, you know that time is yours.
2. Enjoy Your Lunch Hour
If you work outside the home, then take the time during your lunch hour to do something just for you. It can be as little as going for a short walk, reading a book, or browsing in your favorite store. Anything that relaxes and recharges you for the afternoon to come is a great way to give yourself some priority time in the middle of the day.
All three of the soups I purchased have non-BPA lining and are free of preservatives! I loved the Black Bean with Red Quinoa! It has tomatoes, corn and red bell peppers. I ate it for lunch one day with a big salad and it really hit the spot.
3. Take a Few Minutes to Unwind At the End of the Day
When you get home from work, give yourself a few minutes — even 15 is enough — to relax and unwind before you dive into family activities. My favorite way to unwind and say Yes! to some “me” time is walking my dog, Frankie, as soon as I get home. It gives me the chance to not only clear my mind but to find joy. It brings me so much joy to walk my dog at the end of a long day. Everyone should say Yes! to happiness like walking their dog or giving themselves time to unwind at the end of the day.
