For most of my child and young adult life, I definitely considered myself to be an “outdoors person.” I would spend most of my time outside because I loved the way it made me feel and the adventures I would find. During college, I would spend every evening walking outside and clearing my head. I would spend hours outside at the beach, on the front porch reading, and even working out. However, when I graduated college and entered into my career all of that changed.
If you are anything like me, you probably live a fast-paced, technology-filled lifestyle. Between work, the commute, my online classes, taking care of Andrew and Frank, cooking and cleaning, connecting on social media, and Netflix, I’m spending most of my time indoors! Unfortunately, all of this indoor time is not what I want for myself and it’s having a negative impact of my life. It’s time to unplug, get outside, and find adventure!
We were born to be outside more. We were born to move and play. We were born to find adventures and to laugh. We were born to live a full, colorful life. We were Born to Shred. So in efforts to inspire you to get outside more and find adventure, I want to share how I fuel for my adventures and 5 reasons why I love the outdoors.

1. It makes me happy.
When you are outside, you are breathing good, fresh air and taking part in an adventure. It definitely puts a smile on my face that I can feel throughout my entire body. I just love how getting out of the confinement of being inside and breaking out into nature creates unlimited opportunities to create fun memories. It doesn’t matter if I’m hiking in the woods or sitting on a bench at the dog park because it all adds up to joy and fulfillment. We all know how fast life can be, so it’s never too soon or too late to create happy memories that you will cherish and share forever.
2. It makes me healthy
By getting outside, I’m actually living healthier. While being outdoors, I’m getting natural sunlight, improving my quality of sleep, and reducing stress. I’m able to increase my natural Vitamin D intake which can help prevent cancer, strengthen my immune system and fight depression. You can also reduce your stress level while being outside!
3. Gives me a break from technology.
When we’re indoors, we’re usually tied to some form of technology either for our jobs, education, or just personal enjoyment. While being “always connected” has its benefits, it also increases our stress level, shortens our attention span, and creates a heightened level of chaos that we all experience daily. But getting outside and away from technology forces us to do actual physical things, like move, stand, walk, run, and exercise, which translates into healthier, more fulfilling lives.
4. It’s fun way to spend quality time with my family and friends.
When we’re outside, we’re generally more comfortable spending this time with good friends, family members, or groups, which enrich our lives through social interaction. The benefits of socializing through quality friendships are many, and well-known, and by doing it outside as part of an activity or adventure, you are enhancing that quality time. It’s a lot of fun, and gratifying, to plan an outside activity with those close to us, enjoying that activity, and then reminiscing for years to come.
5. I embrace adventure.
When you go seek an outdoor activity, you are embracing an adventure. It doesn’t have to be a weeks’ long backpacking journey or a treacherous white water kayaking trip. It can be as simple as a walk in a park, some light trail running, or visiting waterfalls along the Rogue River or Union Creek. When we take on an adventure, we make ourselves take risks and chances, we are forced to adapt and be flexible within our new unfamiliar surroundings, and we test ourselves as we develop new skills. The end result is an exhilarating experience that will make you want to continue pushing yourself and trying new adventures.
