I’ll never forget the day Frankie, our fur baby, came into our lives. Andrew and I were headed to the bookstore to browse travel books when a bright sign caught our eyes. The sign read “LOCAL PET ADOPTIONS HERE!” and we couldn’t resist ourselves from seeing all the cute dogs. Little did we know… we were going to be rescuing one of those cute dogs!

We had absolutely no intentions of bringing a dog home until we saw our Frankie. Frankie was snuggled in the corner of his crate while all the other dogs where barking for attention. Andrew walked over to put his fingers through the cage to see if he would come to him and Frankie did. He immediately greeted Andrew and his cute little tail started to wag! We asked if we could take him out of the crate and once we did, Frankie just started to give Andrew kisses and his tail couldn’t stop wagging! It was the cutest thing ever. My heart just melted and I couldn’t imagine leaving there without him.

However, Andrew and I were so unprepared to bring a dog home! We had absolutely no supplies and we were clueless on what we really needed. But it didn’t take us long to figure everything out! We have without a doubt created a furever home for our Frankie. So in efforts to help you create your own furever home for your dog, I want to share 6 tips to creating a furever home! I also want to share about the October adoption month, the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Furever Home™ donation campaign, and why you should enter the Rachael Ray™ sweepstakes! By entering the sweepstakes. you have a chance to win $25,000 and other prizes!

YOU NEED A DOG!

You can’t create a furever home without a dog! Today, while Frankie is getting plenty of love and attention, he also taught Andrew and me how important it is to rescue. There are so many dogs that need to be rescued from shelters and rescue groups. Here are three great organizations you can rescue from; Big Dog Ranch Rescue is the largest no-kill dog rescue in the Southeastern United States. The ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of rescue, adoption and welfare and has worked tirelessly for over 150 years to put an end to animal abuse and neglect. North Shore Animal League is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. If you are looking to add a dog to your life, please consider saving one’s life!

FOOD

Not all dog foods are created equally, so it’s important to do your research and discuss with your dog’s vet, breeder and/or shelter as to what foods are best for them as they grow. After much research and speaking with our vet, we decided Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® was the best food for Frankie.

All Nutrish dry dog and cat food is natural with added vitamins & minerals. It's safely USA cooked with the world’s best ingredients. You can shop for Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® at your local Dollar General! In 2007, with help from pet nutrition experts, Rachael Ray created Nutrish super-premium food and treats for dogs inspired by recipes from her own kitchen. Whether intended for dogs or cats, Nutrish recipes are made with simple, wholesome ingredients like real meat or fish, and do not contain poultry by-product meal or fillers.

Rachael’s Rescue® was created for all of the forgotten pets – the ones who might not have someone who loves them as much as they deserve. A portion of proceeds from each sale of Nutrish is donated to The Rachael Ray Foundation, which helps animals in need through Rachael’s Rescue. Through September 2017, Rachael’s Rescue has donated more than $21 million dollars to pet charities and other organizations that do good for animals. The funds are used for food, medical supplies, treatments, and more for animals in need. Many more animals around the country need help, and through Rachael’s Rescue, together we can make a difference in the lives of many four-legged friends.

DOG BED

A comfy dog bed for your new puppy is a must. Whether you are crate training or have your dog’s bed in a designated spot, giving your new puppy a bed to call their own from day one helps them ease into their new surroundings while feeling safe and secure .There are literally thousands of beds to choose from, yet my tip would be to go for a soft, plush bed that your new dog can curl up in. I would avoid purchasing a bed made of wicker or hard material. It can be too irresistible for a new puppy to chew on!

Always choose a bed that is machine washable – this makes life much easier for any new dog owner!

TREATS

Don’t forget to stock up on healthy treats as they will be in demand as you train your new dog in everything from sitting to walking. Remember, treats such as fresh chicken or homemade biscuits can be just as popular as the store bought variety. I personally buy Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® treats for Frankie. Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® offers so many different flavored tasty chew for dogs!

FOOD & WATER BOWLS

Your dog needs at least two dog bowls – one for food and one for water I prefer stainless-steel bowls because they are easy to clean but I’ve thought about switching to ceramic bowls. Frankie has a tendency to move his food bowl if he is mad about being at home alone. Ceramic bowls are too heavy for a dog to slide around on the floor. Plus, they are stylish and east to wash as well! Just remember to clean your new dog’s bowls daily and always keep fresh water available..

TOYS

Every dog loves toys! Fun and functional toys are a must for any new dog owner! If you don’t give your dog something to chew on or play with, they will undoubtedly choose your most expensive pair of shoes to do so. Frankie loves plush toys with squeakers! They are a fun way to play and bond with your new dog, so it’s ideal to have a couple of these on hand so your dog doesn’t get bored. If you have a younger dog, I recommended purchasing sturdy rubber teething toys to keep those puppy teeth occupied!

Frankie didn’t deserve to end up homeless but fortunately, fate hadn’t completely overlooked him.
